Are books dying

The other day I was out having drinks with my friends, a thought came up: this generation doesn’t enjoy good literature anymore. Everything has to be easy, even when it comes to reading. It’s a first world problem and It’s a shame. I’m not a big reader, I read but not a whole lot, I am one of the million that is cursed by the internet where I can just roam around for hours, checking Facebook, refreshing Instagram, reading articles that aren’t professionally proven(can’t trust anything anymore). Anyway, this friend of mine was telling us a story about a friend who likes to share every single bit of detail of the sex life, I wouldn’t say I didn’t enjoy listening (HAHA), the story included some ‘fifty shades’ elements and that got us chatting. (BTW since ‘fifty shades’ was so popular, and the combined novel had sold over 125 MILLION copies worldwide, I followed the trend. I went to the bookstore, got myself a copy and started reading. It was very easy to understand, learned a lot about BDSM, discovered this whole new world, like reading porn, made me feel so much classier than watching porn. Was it a good read? I wouldn’t say so.) Will we be the last generation to read actual books? The friend quoted(something like this): if we can get water from tabs then there’s no point of water mills. Same might apply to books, within a hundred years they may be out fashioned and forgotten.

The death of books, an argument that had also come across my Spanish exam preparation, a text about its history, how it became popular and the invention of printer that helped to promote literature, had made some novels so famous thought out the world. Now it had evolved with all the technology we have for example audio books and kindle, basically, everything became apps and by one click or touch its shared. These all in one tablet, phone, really are handy, along with temptations. I have reading apps on every device, still, I prefer wasting battery on social media. you can’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s what we do now, everyone is judging each other by their page, meaning that we are unlearning from the older generation. Great.

in the end, I just want to say…..I love the smell of books(oh yes), I hope young people make better book choices as well as life, pick up a copy by Shakespeare and be romantic, life’s too short for dating a screen.

  1. I’ve always read a lot but it’s true what you say. The internet can eat into your time badly. There’s got to be a way of organising and disciplining yourself so you can do both. I’m working on it but I’m definitely reading less than I was. Cheers.
